Online shopping in Tanzania
Online shopping is the act of buying a product or pay for a service
over the internet instead of going to a traditional market or store. Globally,
an increasing number of people buy over the Internet because it is more
convenient. As for Tanzanians a good number of them starts paying for services online,
example of these are online Luku payments for electricity, Dawasco bills
payments for water services and cellular Airtime purchase. The challenge
remains on buying tangible products online since still a large mass are unaware
of where to buy or reluctant to adapt.
What can I buy online?
You can purchase almost anything online — starting with greeting
cards to cell phones, a laptop to your dream drive, everything can be purchased
online. While many Tanzanians still find it so difficult to adapt this style of
shopping, many others enjoy its convenience.
How big is online shopping in Tanzania?
Online market is still not very big in Tanzania, as I interviewed
Ms. Nuru, CEO of Kivuko Online shopping gateway identified some challenges to
this. She mentioned some difficulties in payment methods integration and
